BMW 5 Series E60 Specs and Maintenance: Every Engine and the Service Schedule That Keeps One Alive

The E60 sedan and E61 Sports Wagon (2003–2010; US model years 2004–2010) span 184 to 500 hp across seven US engines, three transmissions, and rear- or all-wheel drive. Everything below comes from the E60 guide's Stock Specs and Engine Maintenance tabs, plus its How-To Links. The single theme of the maintenance data: the factory's long intervals are too long, and the cheap fluids are what stand between you and the expensive failures.

M5 (S85B50)5.0L V10500 hp @ 7,750 rpm384 lb-ft @ 6,100 rpm2006–2010

The M5's S85 is BMW's only production V10: 10 individual throttle bodies, an 8,250 rpm redline, and 0–60 in the mid-4s. The 535i's N54 was BMW's first turbocharged petrol 5 Series in the US. The diesels (520d, 525d, 530d, 535d, up to 272 hp / 413 lb-ft in the 535d) were never sold in North America, and the guide's Tier 2 RockAuto catalog is gasoline-only for the same reason. Dimensions for the 530i sedan: 4,841 mm long, 1,846 mm wide, 1,468 mm high, 2,888 mm wheelbase, about 1,505–1,830 kg, 70 L fuel tank; the M5 is the heavyweight at about 1,830 kg. Trunk volume is 520 L.

Transmissions and xDrive

Three gearboxes: a 6-speed manual, standard on the sixes (and a North America-only no-cost option on the M5 from 2007); the 6-speed Steptronic automatic, a ZF 6HP (6HP19 on sixes, 6HP26 on V8s) with a shift-by-wire shifter and steering-wheel paddles from the 2008 LCI; and the 7-speed SMG III sequential manual, standard on the M5. xDrive arrived in 2006 on the 525xi/530xi (and 528xi/535xi from 2007) with the ATC300 transfer case, rear-biased, using DTF-1 fluid. Service the transfer case every 60–80k miles and recalibrate the clutch with a scan tool after. iDrive is CCC (DVD-based) through about 2008 and CIC (hard-drive-based) from 2009. The E60 was among the first BMWs with the Intelligent Battery Sensor — a new battery MUST be registered, or phantom electrical faults and disabled comfort functions follow.

The oil note deserves emphasis: the CBS 15k-mile interval is too long, and the guide's maintenance tab says enthusiasts halve it. N54s punish long intervals and cold revving, and the S85 drinks oil — check its level constantly. On the N54, misfire diagnosis goes plugs, then coils, then injectors: injectors are $250+ each, so do the cheap parts first, and keep a spare coil in the trunk. A rebuilt 6HP automatic is $3–5k; fluid and a filter are cheap insurance. Neglected transfer-case fluid means binding in turns, then a $1,500–2,200 rebuild or a $4,000+ replacement — the guide calls it the number-one avoidable xDrive failure.

Brakes, wheels, and tires

Four-wheel ventilated discs with ABS and DSC standard. Rotor sizes: 324/320 mm on the sixes, 348/345 mm on the V8s, 374/370 mm on the M5. Stock tires: 225/55R16 on the base 525i; 225/50R17 or 245/45R17 on 17-inch cars; staggered 18s on sport-package cars (245/40R18 front, 275/35R18 rear); the M5 runs staggered 19s (8.5Jx19 ET36 front, 9.5Jx19 ET32 rear, Style 166M). Bolt pattern is 5x120 mm with a 72.56 mm hub bore and M14x1.5 lug bolts. Run-flat tires are standard and there is no spare. On xDrive cars the setup is square and all four tires must match in brand, size, and wear — the most expensive avoidable xi failure in the guide.

The big DIY jobs (from the guide's How-To Links)

What this page does not cover: torque specs for these jobs and fluid capacities beyond the N52's ~6.5 L oil capacity stated above. The guide's maintenance tab does not list them, so they are left out rather than guessed — use the linked how-to guides for the numbers. No RockAuto catalog part numbers are cited here: the guide's Tier 2 catalog (snapshot Oct 31, 2026, gasoline branches 2004–2010) stores parts as compact encoded rows and the part-number-to-branch mapping could not be verified reliably, so the catalog is named as a parts source only.
