Gen 1 RAV4 Torque Specs Cheat Sheet

Every torque figure in the Cerch Garage 1st-Gen RAV4 guide, in one place, organized by the job you are actually doing. These are factory figures as documented in the guide's Stock Specs tab and the repair entries they came from. Two warnings before the tables. First, watch the units: a few of the most-damaged fasteners on this truck are inch-pound specs, and 78 in-lb is a gentle snug, not a grunt. Second, torque-to-yield head bolts are single-use. New bolts, every time.

Timing belt and front of engine

FastenerTorque
Crank pulley bolt (19 mm)80 ft-lb
Tensioner bolt (torqued at 45° BTDC)31 ft-lb
Idler pulley bolt31 ft-lb
Cam sprocket bolt40 ft-lb
Water pump bolts78 in-lb
Oil pump housing bolts78 in-lb
Oil pump sprocket nut18 ft-lb
Crank position sensor82 in-lb

Not a torque, but check it while you are there: the tensioner spring's free length is 46 mm when new. Replace a stretched one. Belt tension is set by position, not feel: marks aligned, crank rotated 1 and 7/8 turns to 45° BTDC, then the tensioner bolt torqued to its 31 ft-lb (full method in the guide's Engine Maintenance tab).

Spark plugs

FastenerTorque
Spark plugs, installed dry13 ft-lb
Spark plugs, with anti-seizeabout 120 in-lb

Dry is the documented preference. If you do use anti-seize, the lower figure is not optional; lubricant changes the friction, and the same wrench effort stretches the plug further than you intended.

Cylinder head

FastenerTorque
Head bolts (torque-to-yield)36 ft-lb, then + 90°
Cam cap bolts14 ft-lb

Head bolts are tightened center-out, removed in reverse order, and never reused.

Oil pan and intake

FastenerTorque
Oil pan (FIPG seal, staged cross-pattern passes)48 in-lb final
Stiffener plate bolts27 ft-lb
Throttle body14 ft-lb (168 in-lb)
EGR valve nuts108 in-lb (9 ft-lb)
EGR pipe bolts87 in-lb

The oil pan has no gasket; it seals with FIPG. The 48 in-lb is a final figure reached in staged passes, not a first pull.

Exhaust

FastenerTorque
Exhaust manifold nuts35 ft-lb
Exhaust flange hardware32–35 ft-lb
Downstream O2 sensor flange nuts32 ft-lb

Manifold nuts are final-tightened by hand in the documented jobs, so they back off cleanly next time.

Oil pressure switch

FastenerTorque
Oil pressure switch (Toyota 83530-0E010)11 ft-lb MAXIMUM

This one gets its own section because the direction of the mistake is unusual: too much torque is the failure. The switch is a tapered pipe thread into the head, and over-torquing cracks the new switch the same way the old one cracked. Loctite 242 on the threads, never Teflon tape, which insulates the switch body and kills its ground path.

Front suspension, steering, and axle

FastenerTorque
CV axle nut (30 mm socket)159 ft-lb
Ball joint to control arm94 ft-lb
Outer tie rod end36 ft-lb
Sway bar link, 4-door54 ft-lb
Sway bar link, 2-door36 ft-lb
Strut tower nuts59 ft-lb

The axle nut takes a new cotter pin every time. After torquing, tighten to the next flat to line the pin up. Never back the nut off to align it.

Wheels

FastenerTorque
Wheel lug nuts76 ft-lb

That is the factory spec. Some owners run 80 to 100 ft-lb; 76 is the number Toyota published, and it is the number to use.

Rear differential and Torsen swap

FastenerTorque
Diff mount to differential101 ft-lb
Front mount bracket bolts98 ft-lb
Subframe mounting nuts74 ft-lb
Driveshaft flange bolts54 ft-lb
Rear mount to body48 ft-lb
CV axle flange nuts41 ft-lb
Diff fill and drain plugs36 ft-lb

Transfer case (A540H, 4WD automatic)

FastenerTorque
Transfer case drain plug27–29 ft-lb

The transfer case plug is a 10 mm hex, and never fit a longer plug in its place: internal parts sit immediately behind the hole.

Seats and belts

FastenerTorque
Seat belt buckle bolt32 ft-lb
Seat track bolts27 ft-lb
